La Chiappa ex Coll. Vilain

Murex (Bolinus) brandaris, Linne 1758

Taille: 51/86 mm.

Here are some Murex (Bolinus) brandaris survivors of the collection of Mr. Vilain collected by him at La Chiappa (Corsica) there are over sixty years. I say survivor because many were broken as the siphonal canal that is often the case on such shells. At that time there were still small coastal fishermen who were laying their nets at night, most of these shells were eaten then what is no longer the case. The spines of these are unusually long. This should earn him a name f. any that I don't know! Maybe: Bolinus brandaris longispinus (Coen, 1914) that would be far from Gibraltar. Size: 51/86 mm.
